How to choose a GPU for your processor
Every processor has a limit to how many frames per second it can prepare. Buy a graphics card far beyond that limit and the extra power goes unused, especially at 1080p. The table above shows the fastest card each CPU can keep busy, so you get the most performance without overspending.
- Match the card to your monitor. A high-refresh 1080p monitor puts more load on the CPU. At 1440p and 4K you can pair a stronger card with the same processor.
- Mind the VRAM. For 1440p and newer games, a card with 12 GB or more of video memory ages better than an 8 GB card.
- Check your power supply. Faster cards draw more power. Make sure your PSU has enough wattage and the right connectors before you buy.
- Think about the next upgrade. If you plan to replace the CPU soon, a slightly stronger GPU now can make sense.
When is a GPU too fast for my CPU?
If your CPU sits near 100% while the graphics card stays well below that, the processor is the limit. A bottleneck under 10% counts as balanced. Raising the resolution or graphics settings moves more work to the GPU and can reduce a CPU bottleneck without spending anything.
