How many FPS will I get? The quick answer
With today’s most common gaming PC, an RTX 4060 or RTX 5060 with a 6-core CPU such as the Ryzen 5 7600, you can expect about 78 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, 115 FPS in Fortnite and 271 FPS in Counter-Strike 2 at 1080p on high settings. Your own number depends on four things: your graphics card, your processor, the resolution and the graphics preset. Upscaling (DLSS, FSR or XeSS) and frame generation can then raise it a lot.
Use the FPS calculator above to get the number for your exact parts. It works out the FPS your graphics card can render and the FPS your processor can prepare, then shows the lower of the two, because that is the one you will actually see on screen.
How to use the FPS calculator
- Type your game. The calculator covers 1,008 PC games. 50 of the most played games are calibrated with published benchmark results; the rest are estimated from their official Steam requirements.
- Choose your CPU and graphics card. Desktop, laptop and integrated graphics (Intel Iris Xe, Arc 140V, Radeon 780M and 890M) are all in the lists. Not sure what you have? See how to check your PC parts and performance.
- Set RAM, resolution and preset. Pick 1080p, 1440p, 3440×1440 ultrawide or 4K, and Low, Medium, High or Ultra.
- Add upscaling, frame generation and ray tracing if you use them, and choose your monitor’s refresh rate (60 to 360 Hz).
- Read the result. You get average FPS, 1% low FPS, frame time, what limits your FPS, a table for every preset and resolution, the best settings for your monitor, the upgrade that adds the most FPS and the FPS in every other game on your PC.
Every result can be shared: press “Copy link to this result” and the link opens the calculator with the same parts and settings.
What the FPS calculator results mean
| Result | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Average FPS | The mean number of frames your PC shows each second in a normal gameplay scene. | The headline number. 60 FPS feels smooth; competitive players aim for 144 FPS or more. |
| 1% low FPS | The frame rate of the slowest 1% of frames. | Shows stutter. A game at 90 FPS average with 40 FPS lows feels worse than a steady 70. |
| Frame time | How many milliseconds each frame takes (1000 ÷ FPS). | 16.7 ms = 60 FPS, 6.9 ms = 144 FPS. Lower is smoother. |
| What limits FPS | GPU-limited, CPU-limited or an engine FPS cap. | Tells you which upgrade or setting change will actually help. |
| GPU usage (est.) | How busy your graphics card is. | Under about 90% in a demanding game usually means the CPU is holding the GPU back. |
| VRAM check | Video memory the game needs at your settings vs what your card has. | Running out of VRAM causes stutter and blurry textures, even when average FPS looks fine. |
| Monitor fill | Your FPS as a share of your monitor’s refresh rate. | FPS above your refresh rate is not shown on screen, though it still lowers input lag a little. |
Example: RTX 4060 + Ryzen 5 7600 FPS in popular games
Here is what the FPS calculator shows for one of the most popular budget gaming PCs: an RTX 4060 8GB, a Ryzen 5 7600 and 16 GB of RAM, at 1080p on the High preset with no upscaling.
| Game | Average FPS | 1% low FPS | Limited by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 78 | 61 | GPU |
| Counter-Strike 2 | 271 | 211 | GPU |
| Fortnite | 115 | 90 | GPU |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 | 80 | 63 | GPU |
| Battlefield 6 | 90 | 70 | GPU |
| ARC Raiders | 98 | 77 | GPU |
| Marvel Rivals | 70 | 54 | GPU |
| Black Myth: Wukong | 53 | 42 | GPU |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 78 | 61 | GPU |
| Elden Ring | 60 | 47 | 60 FPS engine cap |
| Valorant | 369 | 288 | GPU |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | 98 | 71 | GPU |
Most of these games are GPU-limited on this PC, so lowering the preset or turning on DLSS adds FPS. Elden Ring is locked at 60 FPS by the game itself, so no hardware runs it faster without a mod.
Cyberpunk 2077 FPS at every preset and resolution (RTX 4060 + Ryzen 5 7600)
| Preset | 1080p | 1440p | 3440×1440 | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra | 64 | 37 | 30 | 22 |
| High | 78 | 56 | 45 | 27 |
| Medium | 97 | 70 | 56 | 41 |

How many FPS is good for gaming?
| FPS | How it feels | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 | Choppy, with visible stutter and slow controls | Not recommended for any game |
| 30 | Playable but not smooth | Slow story games, older consoles |
| 60 | Smooth | Most single-player games, 60 Hz monitors |
| 90–120 | Very smooth and responsive | Action games, 120 Hz screens and TVs |
| 144–165 | Fluid motion, low input lag | Competitive shooters on 144–165 Hz monitors |
| 240+ | Maximum smoothness and the lowest latency | Esports such as CS2, Valorant and Fortnite on 240–360 Hz monitors |
A good target is FPS equal to your monitor’s refresh rate. That is why the calculator asks for your refresh rate and shows how much of it your PC can fill. If your FPS is far above the refresh rate, raise the graphics settings; if it is far below, see whether your monitor is the real limit.
How resolution changes your FPS
Higher resolutions have more pixels for the graphics card to draw. 1440p has 78% more pixels than 1080p, and 4K has four times as many. FPS does not drop in exact proportion, because some of the work per frame does not depend on resolution. In GPU-limited games you can expect:
- 1080p to 1440p: about 25–30% fewer FPS.
- 1080p to 3440×1440 ultrawide: about 40–45% fewer FPS.
- 1080p to 4K: about 55–60% fewer FPS.
If your result is CPU-limited, raising the resolution costs very little FPS, because the processor’s work stays the same. That is why fast graphics cards are often paired with 1440p or 4K monitors. 1080p is still the most common resolution on Steam (47.9% of users in September 2026), followed by 1440p (27.0%).
Graphics presets: Low vs Medium vs High vs Ultra FPS
On a GPU-limited system, going from High to Low typically adds 40–60% more FPS, Medium adds about 20–30%, and Ultra costs about 15–20% compared with High. The exact gap depends on the game: shadows, volumetric fog, screen-space reflections and draw distance are usually the most expensive settings. Texture quality costs little FPS as long as you have enough VRAM.
Lower presets also reduce the work for the CPU slightly (fewer objects and shorter draw distance), so they help a little in CPU-limited games too, but much less than in GPU-limited games.
How many FPS do DLSS, FSR and XeSS add?
Upscalers render the game at a lower resolution and rebuild a sharp image at your screen’s resolution. NVIDIA DLSS works on RTX cards, while AMD FSR and Intel XeSS work on most modern cards. The gain is biggest at high resolutions and in GPU-limited games:
| Upscaling mode | 1080p | 1440p | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off (native) | 143 | 102 | 59 |
| Quality | 174 | 134 | 84 |
| Balanced | 185 | 145 | 92 |
| Performance | 202 | 163 | 107 |
| Ultra Performance | 205 | 198 | 137 |
Use Quality mode at 1440p and 4K for the best balance of image quality and speed. Performance mode makes most sense at 4K, where the internal resolution is still 1080p.
Frame generation: 2x, 3x, 4x and 6x explained
Frame generation inserts AI-generated frames between the frames your PC actually renders. DLSS Frame Generation (2x) runs on RTX 40 and RTX 50 cards, AMD FSR Frame Generation (2x) runs on most modern cards, and Multi Frame Generation (3x and 4x, plus 6x and a dynamic mode since DLSS 4.5) is only available on RTX 50 series cards.
| Frame generation | FPS on the counter | Feels like (rendered FPS) |
|---|---|---|
| Off | 134 | 134 |
| 2x | 242 | 134 |
| 3x | 343 | 134 |
| 4x | 430 | 134 |
| 6x | 591 | 134 |
The FPS counter goes up a lot, and motion looks smoother, but the game still responds to your mouse at the rendered frame rate, and frame generation adds a little extra delay. The calculator shows both numbers. For a good feel, get to a base of 50–60 FPS before turning frame generation on, and avoid it in competitive shooters.
How much FPS does ray tracing cost?
Ray tracing adds realistic lighting, shadows and reflections, but it is the most expensive setting in any game. The cost depends heavily on the graphics card generation, because newer cards have faster ray tracing hardware:
| Graphics card | Ultra, ray tracing off | Ultra, ray tracing on | FPS kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5070 | 83 | 53 | 64% |
| RTX 4070 | 71 | 42 | 59% |
| RTX 3070 | 46 | 25 | 54% |
| RX 9070 16GB | 90 | 52 | 58% |
| RX 7800 XT 16GB | 78 | 35 | 45% |
| RX 6800 XT 16GB | 72 | 28 | 39% |
| Arc B580 | 48 | 24 | 50% |
Some new games, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and DOOM: The Dark Ages, always use ray tracing and will not start without a graphics card that supports it. The calculator flags this instead of showing a fake number.
Why VRAM matters for FPS
VRAM (video memory) holds the game’s textures and other data your graphics card needs right away. When a game needs more than your card has, data spills over to slower system RAM. Average FPS may only drop 10–20%, but the 1% lows collapse, so the game stutters and textures load in late.
8 GB cards, still the most common amount on Steam (26.7% of users), are now the limit in several new games at 1440p, on Ultra textures or with ray tracing. The calculator estimates how much VRAM each game needs at your settings and warns you before you run out. Lowering texture quality by one step is usually the fix.
CPU or GPU: what limits your FPS?
Every frame needs work from both chips. The processor runs the game logic, physics and AI and tells the graphics card what to draw; the graphics card then draws it. Your FPS is set by whichever is slower:
- GPU-limited (most common): the graphics card is near 100% busy. Lower settings, a lower resolution or upscaling add FPS. A faster GPU adds the most.
- CPU-limited: the graphics card is waiting for the processor. Lowering graphics settings barely helps. A faster CPU, especially one with a large cache such as AMD’s X3D chips, adds the most. This is common in esports games, large multiplayer matches, strategy and simulation games.
- Engine cap: the game itself limits FPS (for example Elden Ring at 60 FPS).
The calculator’s “Which upgrade gives more FPS” box compares a GPU upgrade with a CPU upgrade for your game. To check the balance between your parts across all games, use our PC bottleneck calculator, and see the gaming CPU benchmarks to compare processors.
FPS calculator for laptops
Laptop graphics cards share names with desktop cards but are slower, because they run on far less power. An RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is roughly 10–15% slower than a desktop RTX 4060, and the gap grows on thin laptops that limit the GPU to 60–80 W. The calculator has separate entries for laptop GPUs and integrated graphics:
| Laptop graphics | Cyberpunk 2077 (1080p High) | Fortnite (1080p Medium) | CS2 (1080p Medium) |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 Laptop | 129 | 235 | 407 |
| RTX 5070 Ti Laptop | 109 | 201 | 407 |
| RTX 5060 Laptop | 76 | 140 | 330 |
| RTX 4060 Laptop | 74 | 137 | 322 |
| RTX 4050 Laptop | 53 | 120 | 282 |
| RTX 3050 Laptop | 28 | 82 | 193 |
| Radeon 890M | 21 | 63 | 149 |
| Radeon 780M | 17 | 50 | 119 |
| Arc 140V | 16 | 47 | 111 |
Keep your laptop plugged in and set to its performance mode while gaming. On battery, most gaming laptops cut GPU power by half or more. To see what your laptop can run at all, use the Can I Run It game checker.
How our FPS calculator works
We built this calculator to be open about how it gets its numbers, so you can judge how far to trust them.
- Two limits per game. For each game we estimate the FPS a graphics card can render and the FPS a processor can prepare. The lower one is your FPS, and it tells you whether you are GPU-limited or CPU-limited.
- Hardware scores. Every CPU and GPU uses the same gaming score as our bottleneck calculator. Graphics card speed is shaped on TechPowerUp’s relative-performance charts, and processor speed on CPU-limited game tests at 1080p.
- Benchmark-calibrated games. 50 of the most played games have calibration points taken from published review results (TechSpot, Tom’s Hardware and TechPowerUp test suites). For example, TechSpot measured 141 FPS for an RTX 3070 and 191 FPS for an RTX 4070 in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Low, and the calculator gives results within about 5% of those figures.
- Other games. The other games use their official Steam requirements: the recommended specs are set to about 60 FPS on High at 1080p, and the minimum specs to about 30 FPS on Low.
- Settings. Resolution, presets, upscaling, frame generation and ray tracing use factors averaged from published tests. Ray tracing costs are set per GPU generation. Engine FPS caps (such as Elden Ring’s 60 FPS) are applied.
- 1% lows and VRAM. 1% lows are lower when a game is CPU-limited, short on VRAM or short on RAM, as review data shows. VRAM needs grow with resolution, preset, ray tracing and frame generation.
Accuracy: expect real results within about ±12% of the estimate in a typical scene. Results can be lower in the busiest areas of a game, with an old driver, with background apps, or on a laptop with a low power limit. The model and game list were last updated on October 19, 2026.

How to get more FPS
- Update your graphics driver. New drivers often add FPS in recent games. See how to update GPU drivers.
- Turn on upscaling (DLSS, FSR or XeSS Quality). It is the biggest free FPS boost in GPU-limited games.
- Lower the most expensive settings first: shadows, volumetric fog and lighting, reflections and ray tracing.
- Run RAM in dual channel with XMP or EXPO turned on. It can add 10–20% FPS in CPU-limited games; read how RAM speed affects FPS.
- Close background apps such as browsers and launchers, and use your laptop’s performance mode.
- Fix stutter, not just average FPS: see why a high-end PC still stutters and how to fix a bottleneck without upgrading.
Frequently asked questions
What is an FPS calculator?
An FPS calculator estimates how many frames per second a PC will get in a game from its processor, graphics card, RAM, resolution and graphics settings. This one covers 1,008 games and shows average FPS, 1% lows, what limits your FPS and the best settings for your monitor.
How many FPS will I get in a game?
Pick your CPU, graphics card, RAM and game in the FPS calculator at the top of this page. It shows your average FPS and 1% low FPS for your resolution and preset, plus a table for every other preset and resolution. For example, an RTX 4060 with a Ryzen 5 7600 gets about 78 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p High.
How accurate is the FPS calculator?
In a typical gameplay scene, real results usually land within about ±12% of the estimate. The 50 benchmark-calibrated games are the most accurate. Results can be lower in the busiest parts of a game, with old drivers, with background apps open or on laptops with low power limits.
Is 60 FPS good for gaming?
60 FPS is smooth and is a good target for most single-player games and 60 Hz monitors. For fast shooters and high refresh rate monitors, aim for 120–144 FPS or more. Under 30 FPS feels choppy.
Does the CPU or GPU affect FPS more?
In most games at 1440p and 4K, the graphics card affects FPS more. At 1080p, in esports games and in large multiplayer, strategy or simulation games, the processor often sets the limit. The calculator tells you which one limits each game on your PC.
Does RAM increase FPS?
Having enough RAM matters more than speed. Below a game’s required amount, FPS and especially 1% lows drop sharply. 16 GB is enough for most games today and 32 GB helps in the newest ones. Faster dual-channel RAM can add 10–20% in CPU-limited games.
How much FPS does DLSS or FSR add?
Upscaling in Quality mode usually adds 20–45% FPS in GPU-limited games, and Performance mode 40–80%, with the biggest gains at 1440p and 4K. It adds little when your PC is CPU-limited.
Does frame generation increase real FPS?
Frame generation raises the FPS counter and makes motion look smoother, but the game still responds at the rendered frame rate and adds a little input delay. The calculator shows both the counter FPS and the rendered FPS so you can see the difference.
How much FPS do I lose with ray tracing?
Ray tracing usually costs 35–45% of your FPS on RTX 40 and RTX 50 cards, around 45% on RTX 30 cards, and 55–60% or more on older AMD RX 6000 and RX 7000 cards. Upscaling is the usual way to win that FPS back.
Can I use the FPS calculator for a laptop?
Yes. Pick the laptop version of your graphics card (for example RTX 4060 Laptop) and your laptop processor. Integrated graphics such as Radeon 780M, Radeon 890M, Arc 140V and Intel Iris Xe are included too. Thin laptops with low power limits may score up to 20% lower.
Why is my real FPS lower than the calculator?
The most common causes are an old graphics driver, RAM running in single channel or without XMP/EXPO, background apps, a laptop on battery or in quiet mode, high temperatures, or a very busy scene. Check GPU usage: if it is well under 90%, something other than the graphics card is holding FPS back.
Is the FPS calculator free?
Yes. It is free, runs in your browser and needs no download, account or hardware scan.
