Best CPU for the RTX 4080 Super (2026)

Short answer: The slowest processor that keeps the RTX 4080 Super balanced at 1440p is the Ryzen 5 9600X. At 1080p even the fastest gaming CPUs leave some of this card unused. The fastest gaming CPU overall is the Ryzen 9 9950X3D.

A graphics card can only run as fast as the processor prepares frames. Pair the RTX 4080 Super with too slow a CPU and the card waits; pair it with a much faster one and you spend money you will not see in games. We tested 18 current processors with the RTX 4080 Super in our bottleneck calculator and FPS model.

Best CPU for RTX 4080 Super: our picks

  • Minimum for 1440p: Ryzen 5 9600X. Balanced at 1440p (9% CPU). Spend the savings on the graphics card or more storage.
  • Enough for 4K: Core i5-13400F. At 4K the card does most of the work, so a cheaper CPU is fine.
  • Fastest for gaming: Ryzen 9 9950X3D. About 189 FPS on average at 1080p with this card, and the most headroom for a future GPU upgrade.

Best CPU for RTX 4080 Super: things to know before you buy

  • Cache beats cores for gaming. AMD’s X3D chips (Ryzen 7 5700X3D, 7800X3D, 9800X3D) lead in games because of their extra cache, even with fewer cores than Intel’s top chips.
  • Platform matters. AM5 and LGA1851 boards take newer CPUs and DDR5. AM4 and LGA1700 are cheaper and still strong if you already own a board.
  • Power: the RTX 4080 Super needs about 320 W. Add the CPU’s maximum power and 100 W for the rest of the system, then 25% headroom.
  • Resolution changes the answer. At 4K almost any modern 6-core CPU keeps up; at 1080p with a high refresh rate monitor the CPU matters much more.

Best CPU for RTX 4080 Super: frequently asked questions

What CPU do I need for the RTX 4080 Super?

For 1440p, at least a Ryzen 5 9600X. For high-refresh 1080p, the fastest gaming CPU you can afford.

Is the Ryzen 5 5600 good enough for the RTX 4080 Super?

Our calculator gives 35% CPU at 1080p, 24% CPU at 1440p and 4% GPU at 4K. So it holds the card back below 4K.

Does the Core i5-12400F bottleneck the RTX 4080 Super?

Yes below 4K: 36% at 1080p and 25% at 1440p, both on the CPU side.

Intel or AMD for gaming?

For pure gaming, AMD’s X3D processors lead. Intel’s Core i5 and i7 chips are strong all-rounders with more cores for content creation. Within the same price, the gap is usually small at 1440p and above.
